08. Miracles and Hope

The attacks on October 7th were against everyone in Israel – local, foreign, religious, secular, soldier and civilian. In this story we hear about a civilian who was on a military base during the attack, a base that was infiltrated by Hamas terrorists. Michal’s story creates a mixture of all these themes, with the religious civilian medical professional being caught in the middle of a battle on an army base. This all-encompassing story, touching so many parts of Israeli society through this one incident, reminds us of how total the attack was, aimed at everyone we know and everything we love. However, this miraculous story – it is hard to believe that Michal is still alive, given the death she witnessed – is also a reminder that the growth and renewal that will happen after the war will be on a large scale and will come from, and touch, every part of society. The war is deeply scarring and has caused far too much destruction, but the rays of light we see are the outright miracles and the hope that they bring with them.
המטרה ב7 באוקטובר היתה כל החברה הישראלית כולה, ללא אבחנה בין חיילים, אזרחים, דתיים או חילונים. מיכל היא אזרחית, אחות מוסמכת, דתייה, שנמצאת בבסיס שחדרו אליו מחבלים. בסיפור הזה, שנשמע כמו נס גלוי – קשה להאמין שמיכל עדיין חיה, אחרי שהיתה כל כך קרובה למוות – אנחנו אמנם רואים רוע ואבדן בכל מקום סביבנו, אך סיפורי ניסים כאלו מזכירים לנו שהצמיחה והתיקון שיגיעו אחרי המלחמה יצטרכו, גם הם, להיות בכל מקום ובכל חלק של החברה הישראלית.
